It’s a baffling phenomenon: We just can’t get enough of a decade stereotypically dissed for its excess, its supposed bad taste, and its addictions to cocaine and spandex. But make no mistake the 1980’s, will never really disappear from today’s retro-centric culture.
One aspect of the ’80s that does not tend to be remembered fondly is the fashion—the big shoulders and big hair, the power suits and power suspenders, the pouf skirts and leg warmers and headbands and hot-pink cheetah prints, the whole work hard, play hard, dress hard aesthetic.
Video game consoles released in this decade included the continuing popularity of Atari 2600, Intellivision, Vectrex, Colecovision, SG-1000, NES/Famicom, Sega Master System, PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16, Mega Drive/Genesis and Game Boy. Super Mario Bros. and Tetris were the decade’s two best selling and most popular video games. 1980’s Atari VCS port of Space Invaders was the first killer app. Pac-Man was the decade’s highest grossing arcade game.
